Does Internet Speed Matter for Gaming?
Contrary to popular belief, raw download speed is not the most important factor for online gaming. Latency (ping), jitter, and packet loss have a far greater impact on your gaming experience than having a 1 Gbps connection.
Minimum Internet Speed for Gaming
- Download: 3 Mbps minimum, 15–25 Mbps recommended
- Upload: 1 Mbps minimum, 5 Mbps recommended
- Ping: Under 50ms for casual play, under 20ms for competitive
- Jitter: Under 10ms
- Packet loss: 0% ideally, under 1% acceptable
Speed Requirements by Game Type
| Game Type | Download | Upload | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| FPS (Call of Duty, Valorant) | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps | <20ms |
| Battle Royale (Fortnite, PUBG) | 15 Mbps | 5 Mbps | <30ms |
| MOBA (League of Legends, Dota 2) | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | <50ms |
| MMO (World of Warcraft, FFXIV) | 10 Mbps | 3 Mbps | <80ms |
| Sports (FIFA, NBA 2K) | 10 Mbps | 3 Mbps | <40ms |
| Cloud Gaming (Xbox Cloud, GeForce Now) | 35 Mbps | 10 Mbps | <40ms |
Why Ping Matters More Than Speed
Ping is the time it takes for your input (pressing a button) to reach the game server and for the response to come back. High ping causes lag — your character moves after you press the button. In competitive games, even 50ms of extra ping can mean the difference between winning and losing a gunfight.
What Causes High Ping in Games?
- Wi-Fi instead of wired Ethernet connection
- Connecting to distant game servers
- Network congestion (other devices streaming or downloading)
- ISP routing issues
- VPN usage adding extra hops
How to Reduce Ping for Gaming
- Use a wired Ethernet cable — eliminates Wi-Fi latency and interference
- Connect to the nearest server — always choose the closest region in-game
- Enable QoS on your router — prioritize gaming traffic
- Close background apps — stop downloads, streaming, and updates while gaming
- Upgrade to fiber — fiber has the lowest and most consistent latency
- Contact your ISP — ask about gaming-optimized plans or check for line issues
Test Your Gaming Connection
Run our free speed test to check your current ping, jitter, download, and upload speeds. If your ping is above 80ms or jitter above 20ms, your gaming experience will likely suffer.
