Why Speed Test Results Are Often Inaccurate
Many people run a speed test and get results that don't reflect their actual internet performance. The test itself is fine — the problem is usually the testing conditions. Here's how to get reliable, accurate results.
1. Use a Wired Connection
Wi-Fi introduces variables that have nothing to do with your ISP's performance — signal strength, interference, router hardware. For the most accurate test of your broadband speed, connect your computer directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
2. Close All Other Apps and Tabs
Background apps consume bandwidth. Cloud backups, software updates, streaming services, and even browser tabs with auto-refreshing content will reduce your measured speed. Close everything before testing.
3. Disconnect Other Devices
Every device on your network shares your bandwidth. Disconnect or pause other devices — phones, tablets, smart TVs, gaming consoles — before running the test.
4. Test Multiple Times
A single test can be affected by temporary server load or network fluctuations. Run the test 3–5 times and average the results for a more reliable measurement.
5. Test at Different Times of Day
Internet speeds often drop during peak hours (evenings and weekends) due to network congestion. Test in the morning, afternoon, and evening to understand your connection's performance throughout the day.
6. Use a Server Close to You
Speed test results depend heavily on which server you test against. A server on the other side of the world will show lower speeds due to distance. Our speed test uses Cloudflare's global network, which automatically routes to the nearest point of presence for accurate results.
7. Restart Your Router First
A router that has been running for weeks may have memory issues or stale connections that reduce performance. Restart it before testing for a fresh baseline.
Understanding Your Results
- Getting 80–90% of your plan speed: Normal and acceptable
- Getting 50–80% of your plan speed: Investigate — check Wi-Fi, devices, router
- Getting less than 50% of your plan speed: Contact your ISP
